 Annual Seminar Goals
This seminar is designed to provide participants with:

Updates on hot pharmacy topics in multiple areas including infectious diseases, managing narcotic induced constipation, psychopharmacotherapy, cardiology, pulmonary disease, and the implementation of guidelines and algorithms.

An overview of obstacles and solutions for going tobacco-free and implementing guidelines for hospital reimbursement.

Application of new drugs in a variety of disease states and an opportunity to gather more information from company displays in the exhibit hall.

A forum for exchanging practice ideas and issues, successful projects and unique approaches to delivering pharmacy services through interactive posters, pearls and round table discussion.

A focused overview of the pharmacist role as Health Care Providers & legal issues associate with their involvement in CDTM services.

OSHP Golf Outing at Salishan's Course (optional)
From start to finish you will be in awe of the spectacular scenery that surrounds you as you wind your way to the 18th hole. This top caliber course is a test of skill, from the front nine holes surrounded by old growth timber, to the back nine holes that pay tribute to origins of golf with links style play. Redesigned by Oregon golf legend and PGA Professional Peter Jacobsen, this par 71 course is open year round. Preregistration and green fees are required.

Going Tobacco Free at OHSU Kate Farthing, PharmD & Dan Kennedy, RPh (1 hour therapeutics CE) Health care systems are developing policies and procedures to develop tobacco free environments. This session will explain how one hospital’s experiences might address your challenges and help define the role of your pharmacy department.
2:00 – 3:00 pm Evidence-Based Guidelines: Tools to Improve Patient Outcomes & Meet Compliance Measures  Cynthia Reilly, BS PharmD (1 hour therapeutics CE) This presentation will provide a broad discussion on evidence-based medicine and the use of guidelines to meet quality measures, such as the TJC measures and CMS never event related to preventing surgical site infections.
3:00 – 4:00 pm Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI): The Impact of CMS and State Legislation Initiatives Jarrod Brubaker, RPh (1 hour therapeutics CE) This session will provide insight into CMS’s Present on Admission indicators and Oregon Legislation around HAI and their potential impact on Healthcare.
4:00 – 5:00 pm Updates in Psychopharmacotherapy  David Fuentes, PharmD, BCPP, CGP (1 hour therapeutics CE) An overview of new uses and dosage forms of existing pharmaceutical agents and emerging pharmacotherapeutic trends in psychiatric medicine will be presented. Topics will focus largely on medications in the realm of addiction, attention-deficit disorders, insomnia, and depression. Clinical pearls on monitoring parameters and patient education information that might be useful to individuals practicing in the community, clinical and consultant settings will also be presented.

8:00 – 9:00 am An Update on New Anticoagulants: Hope for New Therapeutic Options  Pamela White, RPh (1 hour therapeutics CE) New oral anticoagulant agents are in the pipeline which have greater selectively, rapid onset, and less interpatient variability. This session will discuss how successful transition of these agents from clinical trials to real-life patient care hold the promise for new therapeutic options that offer many advantages over warfarin.
9:00 – 10:00 am Health Care in the 21st Century Michael Grady, MD (1 hour therapeutics CE) Our health care system is broken - unjust and unsustainable - and so it will end. What will replace it? The Archimedes Movement, founded by former Governor John Kitzhaber, does not have a crystal ball. Instead, it offers a vision and a challenge. This session will discuss health care in the 21st century and its impact.

10:15 am – 12:15 pm Pro-Con Debates  Kyle Kojiro, PharmD and Edward Hyde, RPh; Craig Williams,PharmD and John MacKay, PharmD, BCPS; Yvonne Mete,PharmD and Rani Scranton, PharmD; Cathy Baker, PharmD and Jennifer Jordan, PharmD, BCPS (2 hours therapeutics CE) Four focused debates will allow the participants to weigh the pros and cons for the use of appropriate evidence-based medicine in specific patient populations. The debates will focus on controversial issues surrounding the provision of CRRT, identifying appropriate patients for lipid-lowering modalities and best therapies, risk associated with tiotropium use, and the role of the pharmacist in antimicrobial stewardship programs.
12:15 – 1:00 pm Lunch, Open Forum & Drawings The Open Forum provides an update on OSHP activities and an opportunity for members to speak with the Board of Directors about issues of concern.

Ambulatory Care Track
1:30 – 2:30 pm Immunosuppression; Management of Long Term Side Effects Ian Doyle, PharmD (1 hour therapeutics CE) This session will focus on a discussion of risks associated with being exposed to immunosuppression protocols. A review will be given of immunosuppressive agent choices, optimizing drug levels, and prophylactic measures for secondary disease avoidance and side effects.
2:30 – 3:30 pm HIV Review/Update Devon Flynn, PharmD, BCPS (1 hour therapeutics CE) The optimal treatment of HIV is continuing to evolve. With updated HIV treatment guidelines published in 2008 and the seemingly continuous influx of new medications and monitoring parameters, the generalist can quickly be left behind. After attending this presentation, participants will have a better understanding of the most recent treatment recommendations, including medication updates, and clinical pearls.
3:30 – 4:30 pm Asthma Management: 2007 Guidelines & Beyond  Jacintha Cauffield, PharmD, BCPS (1 hour therapeutics CE) The presentation will review changes made in the 2007 guidelines related to the management of asthma. A focus will be placed on differentiating between recommended treatment modalities for pediatric and adult patient populations. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating the safety profiles of currently recommended treatment options.
Information & Technology Track
1:30 – 2:30 pm Pharmacogenomics Primer Ganesh Cherala, PhD (1 hour therapeutics CE) The presentation will introduce the audience to the field of pharmacogenomics. The talk comprises of two parts: first half about the fundamentals and nomenclature of genomics and pharmacogenomics; and the second half about clinical examples where pharmacogenetic information is useful for the practice of pharmacy.
2:30 – 3:30 pm Personal Health Records for Patient Engagement and Improved Care Susan Woods, MD, MPH (1 hour therapeutics CE) This session will introduce trends in personal health records (PHRs) and discuss the use of consumer-facing online applications. As well, the use of PHRs to communicate, complete transactions and patient self-management will be explored.
3:30 – 4:30 pm We Asked for Head-to-Head Studies...Now How Do We Make Sense of Them?  Brad Fujisaki, RPh, BCPS (1 hour therapeutics CE) This presentation will focus on evaluation of non-inferiority and equivalence study designs. FDA considerations for drug approval using these active-control study designs will also be discussed. Differences will be highlighted when evaluating active-control study design compared to the traditional placebo-controlled superiority trials.
Technician Track
1:30 – 2:30 pm Making Pharmacies Green Jeanie Barkett, RPh & Leisa Kraus, CPhT (1 hour other CE) What more can be done to make our planet a safer place? This session will address the “Drug Take Back Program” where pharmacies take back the responsibility of destroying outdated, unused drugs via more environmentally friendly channels. Discussion on ways to recycle “Pharmacy Waste” such as plastic, glass, batteries etc. will also be addressed.
2:30 – 3:30 pm Pharmaceutical Compounding & the Role of the Technician Kevin Williams, PharmD (1 hour other CE) This presentation will consist of an overview of compounding in regards to techniques, specialized equipment, unique dosage forms, specialty compounding for specific disease states and populations, legal considerations, and business opportunities.
3:30 – 4:30 pm Controlled Substance Ordering System (CS0S) Leisa Kraus, CPhT (1 hour other CE) Have you wondered how to implement a Controlled Substance Ordering System at your work site? A detailed outline showing how to get started so you can improve productivity, delivery time and decrease paperwork when ordering CII Narcotics will be presented during this session.

Gary Clausen Memorial 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk (optional)
This free event for all OSHP Annual Seminar attendees honors Gary Lee Clausen, a former OSHP President and avid runner who repeatedly won the OSHP annual fun run by a wide margin. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers for both the run and walk events and to all children under 13 years old who participate. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided for all pre-registered participants, while supplies last. Pre-registration is required.
6:30 – 10:00 pm Kid’s Party Sign up your kids (ages three and up—children must be potty trained to be able to attend) for a fun-filled evening while you enjoy the OSHP dinner. The evening includes a pizza feast and entertainment. Salishan will provide movies, games and other supervised activities for the kids. Pre-registration is required.

Reception & Silent Auction
Come join us for our “Not-So-Silent” auction, which benefits the OSHP Scholarship Fund. Bidders “silently” add their names and bid amounts to items that they are interested in, while the MC keeps things lively with periodic announcements of good deals and items moving quickly. Paddle raises and a game of chance will be added to this year’s event. Auction purchases may be tax deductible to the extent that the purchase price exceeds the fair market value of the item purchased. All donors receive a receipt for their contributions.

9:00 – 10:00 am What's New in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease  Toby Trujillo, PharmD, BCPS (AQ Cardiology) (1 hour therapeutics CE) This session will explore the latest and greatest in Cardiology through an evidence based review of new therapies and recommendations involving hypertension, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmias.

10:30 – 11:30 am Opioid-Induced Constipation Post-Op Ileus Anne Wang, MD
(1 hour therapeutics pain CE) Healthcare providers struggle with how to get the gut moving after opioids, surgery, or both – and it seems that previous “advances” of therapy have not panned out. After attending this presentation, participants will be able to discuss treatment options for opioid induced constipation and post-operative ileus, including new agents such as methylnaltrexone and alvimopan.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm Drug Abuse Trends and Legislation Rob Bovett, JD
(1 hour law CE) Following the presentation, participants will have a better awareness of drug abuse trends, in particular those relating to methamphetamine and prescription drugs. Participants will be able to discuss drug abuse trends and drug control policies and legislation at the state, national, and international level.
